PROLOGUE

The roads surrounding the school were peaceful despite the build-up of traffic and cars parking along the kerbside. With spaces limited, some parents found themselves parking in streets nearby, as previously arranged with their children when they had first dropped them off in the morning. Other parents simply did full laps around the perimeter, until they saw their child coming out of the school-gates. Then there were the parents who were stuck at work, unable to get out to collect their children. Those were the boys and girls who left the school and walked down to the bus-stops, which would take them closer to home, or they walked to the train stations to be collected from the other side.

Victoria was one of the children who had a network card for the train. On the cold winter days it bothered her that her mum wouldn’t come and collect her but - in the summer, when the weather was warm (and she had managed to talk her mum into giving her money for an ice-cream from the nearby shop), she didn’t mind so much.

The station was a fifteen minute walk. She would usually have to stand around on the platform’s edge for another five to ten minutes. The train would then take another fifteen minutes to get to her home station. From there it was a five minute walk to where her mum worked and a further half an hour’s wait for her mum to finish work. Then it was a ten minute drive home by which time Victoria was truly grateful to get in and jump on the settee in front of the television.
